Help is available for Atascosa County residents having trouble paying their rent or mortgage payment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Applications for the program are designed for short-term help, on a first come first serve basis,” county officials said.

The money is from the federal CARES Act passed by Congress after the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“Through the CARES Act passed by Congress and distributed by the Texas Legislature, a fund has been established to assist Atascosa County  residents who have fallen on hard times,” the county said in a news release.

The county expects to be able to help 100 families with rent and mortgage assistance, the news release said, with payments directly to landlords and mortgage holders.

“We wish to use the money to help bridge the gap between jobs for working-class citizens,” the county said.

The county has established a committee to review applications. Residents can apply online.
