ALAMO COLLEGES: Alamo Colleges Announces $1 Million Gift from Malú and Carlos Alvarez

Anounce

Alamo Colleges issued the following announcement.

In celebration of our 75th anniversary, the Alamo Colleges District is excited to announce a $1 million gift from Malú and Carlos Alvarez to establish the Alvarez Challenge Grant, which will fund scholarships for Alamo Colleges’ AlamoPROMISE students to help them reach their educational goals. The Challenge grant is intended to be completed within five years.

“Clearly, Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez recognize the challenges students face in enrolling in college and completing their educational goals, and they also know how critical financial assistance, such as that offered by AlamoPROMISE, is to helping students to overcome these challenges,” said Chancellor Dr. Mike Flores. “We are honored and grateful for their generosity that will help so many students achieve social and economic mobility,” added Flores.

“We are incredibly grateful to Malú and Carlos Alvarez for their generosity and continued support of the first-class educational opportunities available at the Alamo Colleges. Their gift to AlamoPROMISE will long be remembered as visionary and a difference maker for so many in our community,” said Anthony White, immediate past chairman of the Alamo Colleges Foundation board.

This is not the first time the Alvarez family has shown their support for the Alamo Colleges District with a major investment. Carlos Alvarez, an immigrant from Mexico, is a graduate of the Monterrey Institute of Technology with a degree in biochemical engineering. The Gambrinus Company is a family-owned company located in San Antonio, best known for selling and marketing Shiner Beers, all of which are brewed at the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas. Alvarez established the Gambrinus Scholarship Endowment in 2002 with a $500,000 matching grant. That endowment now totals $1 million.

“Malú and I have been committed to education for a long time, and over the years we have supported many scholarship recipients. It is extremely gratifying to us that our first large commitment was to the Alamo Community College District Foundation to fund the endowment for the Gambrinus Scholars. At that time, nearly 20 years ago, we felt that this institution was the best investment vehicle to help students with limited financial resources find realistic pathways to a college education. Today, our support for Alamo Promise reaffirms and builds upon this belief,” said Mr. Alvarez.

Generous donors such as Mr. and Mrs. Alvarez, who care about improving the lives of local residents and the community, are vital to making AlamoPROMISE a reality. The Alamo Colleges District and its partners in AlamoPROMISE, which include the city, county and local businesses, are committed to ending poverty, enhancing economic and social mobility and meeting workforce demands in our area by making it possible for more students to complete college prepared for high-wage, high-demand jobs. Already 3,000 eligible high school graduates have enrolled this fall as AlamoPROMISE Scholars and recruitment efforts for Fall 2021 are underway.
