Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) announced that housing authorities in Atascosa County will receive $44,673 in federal funds.

According to a news release issued by Cuellar’s office, the funds will be used for personal protective equipment, childcare costs, and travel costs for residents seeking COVID-19 testing.

“It is critical that we ensure the safety of Americans living in public housing safe through this public health crisis,” Cuellar said in the release.

As of May 23, Texas reported 54,509 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 1,506 deaths. Atascosa County has 35 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Cuellar said the federal funding will ensure Housing Authorities in Atascosa County have the necessary resources to protect their residents and staff.

"As a senior appropriator, I will continue funding programs that combat homelessness and guarantee housing providers keep their properties safe and well-maintained during these unprecedented times," he said. "I want to thank Mayor Willie Leal Jr., Mayor Travis Hall Jr., City Council members, and the rest of their staff for their dedication to supporting vulnerable populations in our community.”
