Hispanic students comprised the most prevalent ethnic group in Zavala County schools in the 2023-24 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Of the 2,275 students attending Zavala County schools, 97.8% were Hispanic. White students were the second largest ethnicity, making up 1.9% of the total enrollment.

In the previous school year, Hispanic students also made up the largest ethnic group in Zavala County, comprising 97.8% of the student body.

Dr. Tomas Rivera Elementary School had the most even distribution of races among the schools in the county, which included 97.2% Hispanic students, 2.4% white students, and 0.4% Black students.

When compared to the previous school year, total public school enrollment in the county dropped 5.2%.

“As a result, many districts in our very own Central Texas region are being forced to cut back on essential programs, services, consider school closures, and adopt deficit budgets just to provide students with the education that they deserve,” Hutto ISD Trustee James Matlock said.
